The survey instrument

Every course section I taught last year was evaluated by the series of questions in the table below. The students were asked to respond on a five-point Likert scale: strongly agree (5) to strongly disagree (1). Thus, a high score is good and a low score shows room for improvement.

The full Scantron results are available on paper from the VPAA's office. Here, I tabulate the extreme three responses (or more, including ties) for each course section. The table below lists each item and the number of courses, out of seven, in which it was among the best and worst scores.

Note that I taught nine sections, but only seven course evaluated produced useable results as noted below. For one section, all the respondents marked strongly agree for all 19 items. For another section, the tabulation had mathematical errors. However, the results were similar to that from other sections.

Note also that seventeen of the nineteen items were in one or more courses' worst or best lists. Ranking of items and discussion.

Great instructor, great class.

Not what I expected. Interesting class. Doug loves what he teaches and love to help his students.

This course was nothing what I expected but a good learning course.

I felt that the fact the different people had different levels of knowledge as far as computers made it hard. However, I felt like I learned a lot from this course.

Fun great class!

Did not sign up to make a video. Doug assumed we already knew HTML!

Good teacher maybe not make everything due on the computer work more in class.

Doug Anderson is a good teacher very enthusiastic.

Change the room people would be more interested.

This class was real fun and I learned a lot in the world of business.

Having the class on the internet and no text made it very easy to do homework and stay involved with the class. Doug was a good professor. Very easy to talk to and had a very good personality.

The professor encouraged students participation. He led students to think outside of box for answers. Overall, he adequately prepared stuents for the real world (business).

Mr. Anderson was a great teacher. Sometimes I felt he preached marketing rather than management but overall great class.

Best professor here. More professors need to teach like him. Would be a lot more helpful if they did. Learn most from him than anyone else.

Oh, no! I'm a geek.

Doug is a great teacher, very knowledgeable.

I don't like doing everything on RicciStreet. I wish we had homework assignments and due dates and they were graded because I have no idea how I'm doing in this class. But excellent teacher. Very nice.

Comment:

On this set of evaluations, the tally sheet says that there were 8 responses. However, on every line the total is seven. The problem comes from the averages, which are based on 8 rather than 7 and count the missing one as the most unfavorable (to me) responses. For example, Q14. has four responses in Strongly Agree and three in Agree. That would average to 4.6. However, the average is listed at 4, which could only occur by counting the missing one as 0. For another exampe, Q19 has 7 Strongly Agree and 0 for all the others yet an average of 4.38 instead of 5.0. Again, the average of 4.38 can be derived by counting the missing one as 0. That skews the averages so low that this course becomes an outlier compared to my others.

As of January 15, 2008, I have requested that the official tally sheet be fixed, at which time I will complete this portion of my self-evaluation.

full class period 4.91 recommend this course 4.09 Mr. Anderson took the time to help me with whatever issues I had with my project. He always emailed me back which reassured me that he cared. I enjoyed being in his class and would give him the highest recommendation to any at Medaille. I hope to have him again during my last 2 years here.

Excellent clsas & professor. Learned a lot about movie making and cutting clips.

This class was a very valuable tool for the future; sharpening skills of problem solving and stimulating thoughts of creativity.
