Kleinhans is considered one of the most acoustically perfect halls in the world, and that perfection has not diminished through the years.

Collecting as luxury consumption: Effects on individuals and households
Russell W. Belk

Abstract
Collecting is a common acquisitive and possessive behavior that is generally regarded by society as more valued and less selfish than other forms of luxury consumption. Based on depth interviews with 200 collectors, an assessment of collecting is offered considering its problems and benefits for the individual collector, the collector's household, and society. While extreme cases are found in which collecting is addictive and dysfunctional for the individual and his or her family, it is more commonly found to be a beneficial activity, at least for the collector. But interpersonally, collections are found to be perceived as non-human rivals for the affection of collectors in the household and to leave a cultural legacy of material artifacts that over-represent powerful social classes.

Collectors and Collecting: A Social Psychological Perspective
Authors: WILLIAM McINTOSH1; BRANDON SCHMEICHEL2
Source: Leisure Sciences, Volume 26, Number 1, Jan-Mar 2004 , pp. 85-97(13)

Abstract:
Collecting is a pervasive behavior in our culture, yet it has received little attention in the psychological literature. We examine eight aspects of the collecting process, drawing on existing ideas and research in social psychology as well as existing research on collectors and collecting to describe the motivations that underlie collecting behavior. We suggest that collectors are drawn to collecting as a means of bolstering the self by setting up goals that are tangible and attainable and provide the collector with concrete feedback of progress.

Jenna's hook:

As the first bite is taken, this handpicked, piece of heaven takes the mind on a journey. A remarking flavor strikes one’s taste buds, and the thoughts begin to unravel: “This simply is delicious chocolate”. Not only does a single morsel of this fine, homemade slice of paradise has an individual creating a remembrance, but also has one savor the taste. Now, where do you find a piece of candy such as this?

On the other hand…

As one opens a merchandised candy bar, possibly a Snickers or a Milky Way, a sensible aroma is created: milky chocolate, with a hint of caramel, hits the nose. This is a cheap treat for only one or two bucks. As a single bite is taken, a simple thought is created: “Wow, this was a convenient purchase”. Just as fast as one selects a candy bar off of the shelf and is out of the store, the first bite of the candy bar meets the last. Now, where do you find a piece of candy such as this?

Context:

How do they want to spend their life?

Marquise's hook:

Who wouldn’t want to live in a Mansion with beautiful neoclassical designs that you can look at? As if you never needed a TV. Neoclassicism was an influential movement in painting and was also very popular since the 1760s. You would think it should be popular, since there are prints and pictures of neoclassicism on a few of the Mansions on Millionaire’s Row. Neoclassicism comes from the “European and American architecture style inspired by Classical Greek - and especially Roman- ruins.”

Evaluation Criteria

My evaluation system for your writing asks four questions.

content diamond bullet Is it logical, insightful, and visually interesting?
structure diamond bullet Is it easy to follow and learn from?
language diamond bullet Is it written, designed, and presented in an appropriate tone?
mechanics diamond bullet Is it free of error and attractive to look at?

It comes down to this: If I were your boss, I would want to see paper and screen documents that are attractive and accessible. Having your work available when I need it affects the quality component of my assessment. The quality of your writing can be important at raise and promotion time.

These criteria are loaded with ambiguous and subjective terms: easy, appropriate, attractive, good, hard, flair, enthusiasm. Such holistic characterizations come from observations colored by assumptions and prejudices.

For the purposes of giving you feedback in this course, I will use these ideas:

Content

insufficient, irrelevant, invalid, unreliable, incredible <----> sufficient, relevant, valid, reliable, credible

boring <----> interesting, surprising, delightful

misuse of concepts <----> fluent use of concepts

Structure

puzzling, delaying <----> intuitive

at the essay, paragraph, and sentence (syntax) levels

Language

mixed, shaky voice <----> consistent, clear voice

flat, boring voice <----> bright, interesting voice

inaccurate use of vocabulary <----> fluent use of vocabulary

Mechanics

intrusive (misspelling, inconsistent punctuation, diction etc.) <----> invisible
